Actress Gabrielle Union To Appear At All-Star Game Charity 5K & Fun Run By Sports Authority & Nike

July 9, 2010 – Award-winning actress Gabrielle Union will join Major League Baseball, Hall of Famers Rod Carew and Paul Molitor, former Angels Bobby Grich and Tim Salmon, and Jillian Michaels, star of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” and “Losing It With Jillian,” and show her support for cancer research and education at the All-Star Game Charity 5K & Fun Run presented by Sports Authority and Nike, taking place on Sunday, July 11, 2010. Union will help begin the event and cheer on participants at the start line. The event will benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation, Stand Up To Cancer, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and City of Hope with Major League Baseball donating 100% of registration fees to the organizations.

All All-Star Game Charity 5K & Fun Run presented by Sports Authority and Nike registrants who are residents of California and over eighteen years of age will be automatically entered into a sweepstakes to win a pair of tickets to the All-Star Game. Eligible spectators will also be able to enter the sweepstakes for free by submitting an entry form at Angel Stadium in front of the Caps on the morning of the event. Union is best known for portraying passionate characters in movies and television shows such as Bring It On, Bad Boys II, The Perfect Holiday, Running with Scissors, ABC’s “Ugly Betty,” and most recently ABC’s “Flash Forward,” among many others. Union’s dedication and passion can be seen off screen through her involvement with Stand Up To Cancer, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Young Survivor Coalition. Union has become an advocate and a voice to educate women about the risks of breast cancer and women’s cancers.

“The fight against cancer is very personal for me. I got involved in the cancer awareness movement when one of my close girlfriends was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer at age 32. Being part of her fight inspired me to raise my voice to help other women. This is a disease that affects so many women, especially African-American women whose mortality rate is extremely high,” said Union.

Participants in the All-Star Game Charity 5K & Fun Run presented by Sports Authority and Nike will run and walk on a baseball-themed course. The course will begin outside of Angel Stadium of Anaheim, home of the Los Angeles Angels and host of the 2010 MLB All-Star Game, and travel through the surrounding neighborhood. The final stretch of both the 5K and Fun Run will take participants on the warning track, giving fans an exclusive glimpse of the Big A in advance of the 2010 All-Star Game. The All-Star Game Charity 5K & Fun Run presented by Sports Authority and Nike is proudly supported by Aquafina, Bank of America, Firestone, Gatorade and Getty Images.

The 5K, an officially timed event, will begin at 7:30 a.m. PT. Immediately following, at 8:00 a.m. PT the family-friendly 1-mile Fun Run will begin. All finishers will receive a commemorative All-Star medal and t-shirt. The 5K price is $35 (adult) and $30 (children 12 and under) and $30 (adult) and $25 (children 12 and under) for the Fun Run. Registration and race packet pick-up will take place on Thursday and Friday, July 8 and 9, at Sports Authority Tustin Marketplace location in Irvine from 11 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. PT. On Saturday, July 10, registration and race packet pick-up will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PT at Angel Stadium in front of the Caps.

About the 2010 Major League Baseball All-Star Game

The 81st Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be played on Tuesday, July 13th in Anaheim and will feature the best of the American League taking on the top players of the National League. Building up to the excitement of the All-Star Game, Major League Baseball will conduct a wide variety of special events and charitable activities for fans both inside and outside of Angel Stadium of Anaheim. At the ballpark, the events will include Taco Bell All-Star Sunday on Sunday, July 11 featuring the XM All-Star Futures Game and the Taco Bell All-Star Legends & Celebrity Softball Game, and Gatorade All-Star Workout Day on Monday, July 12 featuring the State Farm Home Run Derby on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN Radio. Outside of the ballpark, fans will have an opportunity to experience All-Star Summer through a variety of special events including Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest, the five-day interactive fan festival; the All-Star Game Charity 5K & Fun Run presented by Sports Authority and Nike, a charity run/walk on a baseball-themed route to benefit four cancer organizations; and the MLB All-Star Red Carpet Show presented by Chevrolet, a free parade of All-Stars through the streets of Anaheim, which will be broadcast on MLB Network. The Midsummer Classic will be televised nationally on FOX, broadcast on ESPN Radio and will be shown around the world by Major League Baseball International.
