Request for Applications Now Open for New Stand Up To Cancer-Cancer Research UK Translational Research FellowshipFour grants for up to $315,000 each available; application deadline is July 28, 2014
April 7, 2014 – PHILADELPHIA — The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) is now accepting applications for the Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C)-Cancer Research UK Translational Research Fellowship, which will provide up to four grants for postdoctoral or clinical research fellows, each up to $315,000, over a four-year period. This grant opportunity is provided by SU2C and Cancer Research UK and is the first joint research project resulting from the collaboration between the two groups announced in 2012.
The transatlantic partnership between SU2C and Cancer Research UK has been made possible by the launch of SU2C in the United Kingdom in 2012. This is a joint national fundraising initiative between Cancer Research UK and the U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 to help accelerate groundbreaking research.
The SU2C-Cancer Research UK Translational Research Fellowship will provide four years of research fellowship support to talented and promising early-career investigators in the United States and the United Kingdom who demonstrate clear potential to become leaders in their fields. Research projects must be translational in nature and address critical problems in cancer with the potential to deliver benefit to patients.
The proposed work must be performed in two phases, one in the United States and one in the United Kingdom. Each phase must be one to three years in length, and the total support period for this fellowship is a maximum of four years. Applications must identify one mentor and qualified host laboratory in the United States and one mentor and qualified host laboratory in the United Kingdom. Mentors should be established leaders in cancer research with a track record of successful mentoring. The research proposal must describe how the work has the potential to advance to the clinic.
Since the launch of SU2C in 2008, the AACR has played an integral role as SU2C’s Scientific Partner, providing scientific leadership, expert peer review, and grants administration. To that end, the AACR will work closely with Cancer Research UK on this project. A SU2C-Cancer Research UK Joint Scientific Advisory Committee will conduct an interactive, rapid, and rigorous evaluation of the applications via a multistep scientific review process, and will recommend final grant recipients. Lee J. Helman, M.D., and Richard M. Marais, Ph.D., F.Med.Sci., will co-chair the committee. Helman is scientific director for clinical research and head of the Molecular Oncology Section at the National Cancer Institute Center for Cancer Research. Marais is director of the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute, where he also heads the Molecular Oncology Group.

Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) raises funds to accelerate the pace of research to get new therapies to patients quickly and save lives now.
